Restricting Child Custody For Sex Offenders

Springfield, IL – The latest in a long line of bills sponsored by State Senator Don Harmon (D-Oak Park) cracking down on sex offenders was recently signed into law by Governor Rod Blagojevich. The most recent measure (SB 2873) simplifies the process for committing a sexually violent person to a secure psychiatric facility.

Senate Bill 2873 strengthens the state's Sexually Violent Persons (SVP) Act to ensure that the most dangerous sexual predators – those whom authorities believe will attack again – are confined indefinitely. Illinois is one of 16 states that has an SVP program, which can result in the civil commitment of an offender if he is deemed sexually violent upon his parole from the Illinois Department of Corrections (IDOC).

Senator Harmon said the changes made by the new law will allow sexually violent persons – after completing their criminal sentences – to go directly from prison to secure psychiatric facilities, without being released while they still pose a danger to the community.
